Evidence over fear
Clear context, credible research, and practical perspective.
Materials science for everyday life
We uncover what is hidden in the materials, finishes, and products around you—then create a clear, practical path to a lower-toxin home.
The home is a living system
Labels rarely tell the whole story. Paint, flooring, furniture, cookware, cleaning products, and nursery essentials can all introduce avoidable exposures into daily life.
Nettoyer pairs deep materials expertise with thoughtful design to help you prioritize what matters, make confident swaps, and create a home that feels as good as it looks.

Prioritized recommendations that fit real homes and real lives.
Healthier materials and thoughtful design can belong together.
What we look for
We translate complex chemistry and material data into decisions you can actually use—room by room, product by product.
Indoor air & VOCs
We examine likely sources of off-gassing and indoor pollutants, then identify the changes most likely to improve the air you live in every day.
Ways to work together
From one focused question to a full-home review, each engagement is tailored around your concerns, priorities, and pace.
A room-by-room assessment of materials, products, and exposure priorities, followed by a clear action plan.
Material and finish guidance for remodels, new builds, and design decisions before they become expensive to change.
A targeted working session for a room, product category, or decision that deserves an expert second look.
A clearer path forward
We begin with your home, your concerns, and the way your household actually lives.
We assess the spaces and materials that matter most, with testing where appropriate.
You receive a considered report with safer alternatives and a practical order of operations.
We stay available as you choose products, plan changes, and put recommendations into practice.
Meet the founder
Steph Brookins brings a materials scientist’s rigor and a designer’s eye to the question every family deserves to ask: what is our home made of?
With a Master of Science in Materials Science & Engineering and more than a decade of experience across design, materials, manufacturing, and chemistry, Steph helps clients see beyond packaging and marketing claims.
Nettoyer was born from her own search for safer products as a new parent—and the realization that families need an expert translator in a marketplace short on transparency.

Materials
A “free from” claim answers one narrow question—not what replaced that ingredient or what else is in the product. Look for fuller material disclosure, credible third-party standards, and manufacturers willing to answer specific questions.
Room guide
Start with the choices you encounter most: the air you breathe, the water you drink, household dust, food-contact surfaces, and heavily fragranced products. Work through one category at a time—meaningful progress matters more than replacing everything at once.
Renovation
Before choosing paint, flooring, adhesives, or cabinetry, consider the full assembly—not only the finish you can see. Favor transparent product documentation, plan for ventilation during installation, and allow adequate time for materials to cure before settling back in.
